New Album Review - Heltah Skeltah - D.I.R.T.

D.I.R.T., or Da Incredible Rap Team, is the latest album by Heltah Skeltah, the dynamic duo of Sean Price and Rock. Although Sean Price and Rock have been putting out some astounding solo material in the past couple of years (Sean P especially), this is their first album as Heltah Skeltah in 10 years now. But you’re not interested in information you can Wikipedia on your own free time right? So let’s get on with the damn thing

Hits aka Why You Should Care

1. As far as lyrics go, Sean Price and Rock are rarely slouches, and this album is not exception to the rule. Their technique and chemistry certainly hadn’t rusted in their 10 year hiatus as a group. I do have one small complaint, but I’ll get to that when I get to it.

2. The production on this is for the most part not the most complex of backdrops. However, the beats complement the duo so well, it’s pretty amazing. Expect nitty gritty, raw, ominous tones throughout. In particular, props go to Ill Mind and Khrysis for pleasant surprises.

3. Good tracks: Everything Is Heltah Skeltah, The Art of Disrespekinazation, Da Beginning Of The End, D.I.R.T. (Another Boot Camp Clik Yeah Song), So Damn Tuff (ft Buckshot and Ruste Juxx), Insane, W.M.D. (ft Smif N Wessun), Ape Food (ft The Representativz), Ruck and Roll

Strikes aka Why You Should Be Wary

My smallest complaint is that the group’s subject matter really hasn’t evolved at all. However, since this is what we’ve come to expect from these guys, it’s not the worst thing.

Balls aka Whatever Floats Your Boat

1. I don’t usually comment on the album cover, but that thing is ridiculous….

2. I would’ve enjoyed a Fab 5 reunion. Maybe on the next O.G.C. album? Or maybe, I’m just dreaming.

3. Solid songs: Intro (ft Don Rocko, BummyFlyJab, Alkatraz), Twinz, That’s Incredible, Hellz Kitchen, Smack Music

Final Thoughts:

I enjoyed listening to this from front to back. However, bear in mind that I am a huge Boot Camp Clik fan, particularly of Sean Price, so my opinion may be a bit biased. So I’m gonna say that if you fall into the same category as I do, get off your ass and pick up a copy. It’s not Nocturnal, but it’s better than Magnum Force (mind you, I’m not one of those that thought Magnum Force was a horrible album). For everyone else, if you enjoy the hardcore, gritty, NY sound, chances are you’ll enjoy this as well. In fact, if you enjoy that sound and haven’t heard any Boot Camp Clik shit yet, seriously… what the hell? Do yourself a favor and pick up their shit now.
