A Sample of the Rest of 2008.
I know that every Tuesday and Saturday are supposed to be new album review days but sorry, there hasn’t really been a new album released this past week. Don’t worry though. With Little Brother, N.E.R.D., and Lil Wayne all dropping this coming week, there’ll be more than enough new material to satisfy your appetite. Of course, that’s if the albums are good. Little Brother’s dropped good to great albums on a consistent basis so I can guarantee you that their new one, And Justus For All, is gonna be banging. On the other hand, N.E.R.D. and Lil Wayne undeniably both have their moments but based the way the Neptunes’ production has been less than great lately and that awful excuse for a hip hop song Lollipop, I’m a little hesitant about Seeing Sounds and Tha Carter III. Still, let’s hope for the best right?
Besides, even if those two albums end up being crap, 2008 is far from over and there’s still a bunch of artists set to release new material. A quick, incomplete list is as follows.
June 24-
Immortal Technique: The 3rd World - It’s not the Midde Passage album that he’s been promising us for the past many many years but it’s still first new Immortal Technique album we’ve got in about 5 years now. Should be good.
Three 6 Mafia: Last 2 Walk - Not the biggest fan of Three 6 Mafia, but I’ve enjoyed a couple of their songs (Stay Fly was ill). Who knows? Maybe they’ll surprise us with some quality shit.
July 1 -
Tech N9ne: Killer- Tech N9ne is a weird rapper. Hit or miss for me. I don’t know what to make of the fact that he’s releasing a new album.
G-Unit: Terminate on Sight - As if their last group album wasn’t bad enough. Geez, my prediction is that this one will be worse, because word on the street is that there’ll be less Young Buck and more Tony Yayo.
Busta Rhymes: Blessed - Busta’s single from this album with Linkin Park was I think a pleasant surprise. I’m looking forward to this one even though In haven’t fully enjoyed one of his albums since E.L.E.
July 8-
Jean Grae and 9th Wonder: Jeanius - Yeah yeah I know, it’s been leaked since forever. Doesn’t change the fact that it’s a hot album. Cop it when it gets an official release next month.
July 15-
Nas: Untitled- As much as I’m looking forward to this, I’m skeptical as to the truth of this release date. Nas albums tend to be delayed a lot and this one doesn’t even have a damn title yet.
TBA -
Common: Invincible Summer- His last album didn’t match up to the hype and his latest song with Pharrell was questionable. Still, new Common is new Common and I’m excited.
Mos Def: The Ecstatic- But not as much as I am about this one. I’m calling it now. This is gonna be Mos Def’s comeback.
Common Market: Tobacco Road- Based on the quality of their Black Patch War EP that dropped last month, I can safely say that this album is gonna rock.
Talib Kweli: Prisoner of Consciousness- This is actually only one of three albums Talib is planning for this year, the other two being a new Reflection Eternal album and an Idle Warship album. Chances are we’ll be lucky to see one of them released before 2009.
Q-Tip: Renaissance- This album has been postponed again and again. If this turns out to be shelved like Kamaal and Open was, I’m gonna be pissed.
Deltron 3030: Deltron Event II- Another album that’s taking its sweet time to come out. Kid Koala and Dan the Automator have both confirmed that their parts on the album have been finished for a while now. This can only further prove my theory that Del is as lazy as he is talented.
I’m sure there’s more that’s scheduled to come out this year but for the moment, I feel like that’s enough. If you have anything else to add to the list feel free to comment.
